Interactive, fun workshop led by January Akselrad, author of “Classroom Teacher As Theater Director,” gives participants the tools and confidence to use curriculum-based plays to teach content and character education while taking students on a language and skill-building journey past Reader’s Theater and into performance!
• Acquire the skills and confidence to put on a class play
from choosing a script, casting, creating theater unit
ground rules, read-throughs (as close reading),
memorization techniques (as test practice), fitting in
rehearsal schedules, adding music, blocking, stagecraft,
handling nerves, designing playbills, cuing lines, cast
party (as debriefing and celebration of learning!)
• Understanding experiential learning benefits of moving
past Reader’s Theater into production such as improving
language fluency, effective listening, confidence, test-
taking and social skills
• How-to create original plays/skits from books and
curriculum topics, and as a class project
